China’s International Air Cargo Volume Grows 13.9% in H1
China’s air cargo market showed a clear divergence between international and domestic routes in the first half of 2026.
International routes handled 2.32 million tons of cargo and mail, up 13.9% year on year, significantly exceeding the overall industry growth rate of 6.0%.
The domestic market, meanwhile, cooled, with domestic cargo and mail volumes at Guangzhou, Chengdu Shuangliu and Chengdu Tianfu airports falling 10.8%, 10.9% and 21.1%, respectively.
The continued expansion of cross-border e-commerce has become a major driver of international air freight growth. According to the Air Logistics Branch of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, approximately 60%–70% of China’s air cargo currently comes from cross-border e-commerce, with cargo flows increasingly shifting toward emerging markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
